Jason Smith, Basketball Giant

. . . With bonus sound clips.

He prays before he plays, so really, how relevant is God in his life? Smith is intentional in connecting his faith to all his life, including the role of a professional sportsperson. When asked whether it was difficult balancing these aspects of his life, he admits he’s begun answering that question in a different way.

Time to Tackle Obesity

Both obesity and smoking are significant public health threats, which can take years off your life. But while smoking rates have dropped over the past 30 years, the rate of overweight and obesity has trebled in some age groups, most significantly among children. The health improvements that have come about from getting Australians to stop smoking are offset by the obesity.

Ancient Antidote for a Modern Malaise

We all are too busy, and we’ve been hoodwinked into believing what constitutes success and a happy life. But within my head is a small voice telling me there is a way out of the rat race, and it’s getting louder. Stress is an acknowledged killer in Western societies. But to that there’s a simple, God-given solution. You just need to be willing to try it.

Road to Recovery

Three months on and the images of the Boxing Day tsunami is fading from our TV screens, newspaper headlines and radio reports. But the effort to help the survivors is far from finished. Away from the cameras, aid agencies, government bodies and community groups are still hard at work helping the people recover.

Flats in the Outback

The sun had just risen above the desert scrub as I returned to my tent from a morning walk. I could see everything, including the second flat rear tyre on my brother’s Pajero 4x4.

Reader Survey

In the months of April and May 2005 Signs subscribers/readers each had $A1 donated to tsunami rehabilitation efforts just by telling Signs want they thought in our Reader Survey. You can still partake and tell signs what you think of their magazine.

Resurrection and Other Mysteries

Of all Christ’s magnificent miracles, His raising the dead to life remains the most significant for us today. He brought back to life the daughter of Jairus, the son of the widow of Nain and His friend Lazarus. But the resurrection of Lazarus is unique because it happened four days after Lazarus had died.

Tracey Richardson: Whatever It Takes . . .

There’s nothing mystical about Ironman. Boiled down, it’s a triathlon—a swim, a bike ride and run—of extraordinary proportions,” says New Zealand’s “ironman,” Tracey Richardson. “Yet there’s something about this event that brings out extraordinary qualities in people. To me, Ironman’s always been way more than just travelling the required distances. There’s a difference between doing an Ironman and being an Ironman.”

Romance at Work

Many affairs begin in the workplace and most don’t have happy endings. Close friends and colleagues are divided on the issue of “dobbing,” protecting the innocent party, and the effect it will have on staff morale and business productivity.

The Devil’s Deception

Someone once estimated that between 3600 BC and the present, humankind has fought in 14,531 wars. During that same period, we’ve had more than 5300 years of war and just 290 years of peace. This is not surprising, given that behind them all, invisible to humanity, there is a cosmic war raging between forces of good and evil.

Peace, from Geneva

When World War I drew to its close after five years of horror, the city of Geneva, on the shore of tranquil Lake Geneva, Swizterland, was chosen to be the home of the peace organisation that was to ensure that such war never recurred. The League of Nations, as it was called, was located in a neutral land, in the French-speaking portion of western Switzerland.

My Father’s Saving Hand

I was born into a strict well-to-do Buddhist family in a village on the Thai–Burma border, in 1980. Life went well for me as a baby until, at 19 months old, I had my first encounter with death. I was afflicted by seizures on and off for two days.
My parents called a medical doctor, then a herbal doctor, then sent for some Buddhist monks, but all failed to heal me. My family resigned themselves to my imminent death, then waited.
